Dr. Joanne Hessney has announced her retirement from Rochester Regional Health as of the beginning of April.

Dr. Hessney is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of Utah College of Medicine and completed her residency in anesthesiology followed by a fellowship in critical care medicine at the University of Rochester. She joined the medical staff at Park Ridge (now Unity) Hospital in 1990, beginning three decades of clinical excellence and outstanding physician leadership.  As Chief of Critical Care at Unity from 1991 to 2007, she led that unit to national recognition.  In 2012, Dr. Hessney was appointed as Unity’s first Physician Advisor and Medical Director of Care Management.  Her dedication and creativity have led to marked improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of capacity management and quality care.  Among many leadership roles, she has served as President and Secretary/Treasurer of the medical staff.  An adjunct faculty member at RIT, she has  a longstanding commitment to the education of medical trainees and professionals.

Dr. Hessney has been recognized beyond the medical staff for her leadership contributions, being described by hospital staff as “the heart of Unity.”  She has championed teamwork and is a valued friend to administrators and to front line staff of all disciplines.  She has been outspoken throughout her tenure in the constant pursuit of making Unity a better place for patients and staff.
