Physician and Board Member From Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic Receives Prestigious Philanthropy Award

Congratulations to Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic physician and board member, Dr. Sidney Sobel and his wife Barbara, for receiving the Rochester Community Foundation’s prestigious 2016 Philanthropy Award at the annual meeting and luncheon held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Sept. 22, 2016.

The Sobels were recognized for their support of many organizations and causes they have endorsed over their 36 years of marriage. For many of those years, Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic and the people of the Finger Lakes have been among the fortunate recipients of their generosity. The Sobels have given of their time, talent and treasure, and have lived by the motto, “There is such joy to be had in giving.”

The Sobels’ desire to bring specialty cancer care services to the people of the Finger Lakes began more than 20 years ago. Dr. Sobel, a radiation oncologist, witnessed the hardships faced by people diagnosed with cancer living in rural areas. To allow patients to receive cancer treatments closer to home, he and Barbara took out a personal construction loan to build the Finger Lakes Radiation Oncology Center in Clifton Springs in 1985. “We didn’t have that kind of money. I think the bank was impressed with the husband-wife teamwork and our passion,” Dr. Sobel said. Once the Clifton Springs project was successfully completed, the Sobels backed the building of two other facilities in Hornell and Batavia. Dr. Sobel has served on the Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic Board of Directors since 2004.

The Sobels were recognized for their support and volunteerism benefiting many community organizations including Hillel Day School, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Community Federation, Congregation Beth Shalom, Willow Domestic Violence Center, Hochstein School of Music & Dance, Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Rochester, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others.

Since opening their first fund at the Community Foundation in 1991, Dr. and Mrs. Sobel have distributed more than 600 grants to benefit the community.
