ENGAGE FOR HEALTH: RGH Nurse Leaders and Werner Library Team Up to Educate Community Members


Rochester General Hospital nursing leaders Julie Gottfried, DNP, and Ana Ramos, MSN, and RGH Librarian Mary Ann Howie, MLS, will present Engage for Health” to community members at the Webster Public Library on April 6 at 2 pm.

Engage for Health is a community education program for public libraries that teaches community members strategies for improving communication with their healthcare providers and demonstrates how to research health issues using quality online health resources. The program was developed by The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region (NNLM/MAR).

Participants will learn what it means to take an active role in their care and understand why this is important. The presenters will also review tools for finding reliable health information, such as MedlinePlus. A script for a “role play” exercise (a mock medical appointment) between a healthcare provider and an audience member is also included.

  • Julie Gottfried, DNP, RN, CNS, CPNP-PC, is the Magnet Program Director at Rochester General Hospital, who oversees the hospital’s fourth Magnet redesignation process.
  • Mary Ann Howie, MLS, is the consumer health/patient education librarian at Rochester General Hospital, who helps patients, families, and the general public find reliable health information.
  • Ana Maria Ramos, MSN, RN, NE-BC, is Director of Nursing for Women’s and Children’s Services at Rochester General
